Making HER-story: Women In Sports

Women's history came to vibrant life at the Houston Galveston Area Council's stirring event, "Making HER-stoty: Women in Sports," where an ensemble of remarkable women gathered to honor the unwavering spirit of female athletes. This collaboration of pioneers brought forth the important message for all women that encourages and motivates women to be great every single day.

Working alongside the event coordinator, Dominique Williams, Tramashika Dewalt, UISC founder, played a pivotal role in coordinating the panelists for this event, which blossomed into a symphony of empowerment, bringing together a constellation of trailblazers. Each woman on the panel shared her brilliance, contributing to the ongoing narrative of women's progress in sports. From the groundbreaking pioneers who shattered glass ceilings, such as Debra Rossow, the first woman in the WB (now the WNBA), to the triumphant achievements of Alex Singer, the first female GM of a professional soccer team, the stage was ablaze with the fierce determination of women carving out their place in history.

At the heart of every great story in women's sports lies an indomitable spirit and an unwavering dedication to excellence. Debra Rossow's journey, from her record-breaking days at the University of Las Vegas Lady Rebels to her pioneering role in the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL), serves as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.

Rossow's trailblazing path, etched with resilience and determination, reflects the essence of women's history in sports. As one of the first women to grace the WBL, she shattered barriers long before the WNBA took center stage. Her success on the court was not merely a testament to her talent, but also to her character – she attributes her achievements to her coachability and obedience, virtues instilled in her from a young age.

Yet, Rossow's story extends far beyond the confines of the basketball court. Following her professional career, she returned to her roots in Southern Brazoria County, where she embarked on a new journey as an educator and coach. For over three decades, she has dedicated herself to molding young minds and instilling in them the values she learned through sport – perseverance, resilience, and the importance of education.

Rossow's message resonates loud and clear: education is the cornerstone of empowerment. As she imparts her wisdom to the next generation, she emphasizes the significance of having something to fall back on, echoing the sentiment that education provides a sturdy foundation upon which dreams can flourish.

In celebrating Rossow's legacy, we not only honor her remarkable achievements in sports but also recognize the profound impact of women's education. Her story serves as a reminder that through resilience, determination, and a commitment to lifelong learning, women can conquer any challenge and write their own inspiring chapters in history.

Another trailblazer we had the privilege of speaking with was Houston Dash's, Alex Singer. On September 6, 2022, history was made as Alex Singer was announced as the inaugural general manager of the Houston Dash, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the club's history. Singer's journey from a rookie defender in Women’s Professional Soccer to her influential role at Octagon, where she negotiated groundbreaking player contracts, exemplifies her deep roots and extensive experience in the world of women's soccer.

Singer's appointment signifies a significant milestone in women's history, highlighting the growing presence and influence of women in leadership roles within professional sports organizations. As the first general manager of the Houston Dash, Singer is poised to elevate the club to new heights, both competitively and in terms of its global reputation. With her vision and dedication, she aims to transform Houston into a premier destination for international players, solidifying the Dash's position as a powerhouse in women's soccer.

In the tapestry of women's history in sports, the stories of these remarkable women shine brightly, igniting inspiration and leaving an indelible mark on all who hear them. From the triumphant strides of Cynthia Cooper, a four-time WNBA champion, to the visionary leadership of Helen Bohanna, a sports agent and WNBA team owner, each narrative is a testament to the boundless potential and resilience of women in athletics.

Liz Mayerich, the fencing owner and coach of Houston Swords, stands as a beacon of empowerment, breaking barriers and nurturing the next generation of athletes. Tanesha “Coach Tee” Barefield's journey, as the first African-American woman to own a basketball gym in Houston, embodies the spirit of perseverance and determination, while Tyeisha Charles Smith's trailblazing path as a former Houston Heat women's football running back inspires us to defy expectations and reach for the stars.

As a privileged guest amidst such luminaries, it was an honor for UISC founder, T Dewalt - whose sports journey traces back to her time playing for the Army Women's Basketball team and Volleyball Team in South Korea from 2005 to 2006 - to stand shoulder to shoulder with these titans of achievement, collectively etching new chapters in the records of greatness.

Every compelling narrative from this event and from each speaker is fueled by an unyielding spirit and an unwavering dedication to excellence. Similarly, United in Service Coalition (UISC) embodies more than just an organization; it stands as a beacon of hope, a symbol of unity, and a force for transformation. Established by Tramashika 'Ms. T.' DeWalt, a devoted female veteran, our mission is firmly grounded in the conviction that collective action can shape a world where each person flourishes. Just as women athletes push boundaries and inspire others with their resilience, UISC strives to ignite change and foster a community where solidarity and support reign supreme.

As we immerse ourselves in these remarkable narratives, we're reminded that women's history in sports is more than just a list of accomplishments; it's a legacy of bravery, perseverance, and empowerment. These women have laid the groundwork for future generations to aspire higher, dream bigger, and reshape the narrative of what can be achieved. Their stories resonate as a call to action for women everywhere to embrace their strength, pursue their ambitions, and make a lasting mark not only in the realm of sports but also in broader society. Through collaboration and support, we can amplify these messages and further the mission of UISC to bring veterans and the community together, fostering unity and empowerment for all.
